Why is Hydra Product aggregate pool finishes better than regular plaster?
*In the 1940's and 50's the white plaster mixture used white portland cement, silica sand, and water, with a bit of calcium chloride added as a setting agent. This pool surface became almost legendary for it's durability. It was not uncommon to hear about finishes that lasted upwards of 30 to 40 years.
As the years went by many in the industry sought a competitive edge which resulted in a formula change. As the silica sand is not a pure white color the contractors began substituting marble/calcite aggregate in the place of silica sand. This gave and still gives the surface a whiter appearance; however, it is a more soluble substance than silica. This means the surface was and is more susceptible to damage traceable to water balance. It is a weaker plaster product that just does not last as long.
With the knowledge of these historical, scientific facts Hydra Product was formulated with silica quartz one of the foundational ingredients. We do not use any marble/calcite aggregate in our product. Our product contains, portland cement, crushed silica quartz, pozzolan and if you have one of our pebble products the pebbles are included. This formula gives the consumer the longevity back that has been removed from regular plaster when the silica was removed and replaced with marble/calcite. The pozzolan additive in our formula makes the surface material even stronger.
The purpose of the pozzolan is to combine with the calcium hydroxide that is released from the portland when it is hydrated. Once the pozzolan combines with the calcium hydroxide it forms a cementitious substance that gives the surface material added strength and water tightness. Hydra Color is formulated with a stabilizer that aids in reducing the fading process of the pigment. All colors will fade over time with the sun exposure and chemicals. However, our colors are mostly inorganic with additives to stabilize and protect from UV rays.
Choosing Hydra Products gives you the advantage over plaster and other colors on the market as we have put in place ingredients to provide more protection to the surface and longevity of life.
